In the film The Finest Hours 3D 2016, based on a true 1952 event, the SS Pendleton oil tanker splits in half during a brutal nor'easter off Cape Cod. With the stern section sinking, engineer Ray Sybert must rally the surviving crew to keep it afloat. Meanwhile, Coast Guard Captain Bernie Webber and three volunteers launch a tiny rescue boat into the monstrous storm. With little navigation and against impossible odds, they brave towering waves and hurricane-force winds to locate the wreckage and attempt the daring rescue of over thirty stranded sailors.
